We understand, it can be difficult to know whether it is best to try and repair your lawn or that the time has come to replace it with new turf.
When to Repair your Lawn:
The lawn is less than 50% of weeds. Instead of replacing – apply a herbicide specific for the type of weeds found in your lawn as well as the variety of turf you have at your place.
While the grass may be a little thin in places or there are some bare patches, the lawn is overall quite healthy. Instead of replacing – apply fertiliser and water it in well. This will strengthen your lawn and encourage new growth and lead to the self repairing of any bare patches. If you have a few larger bare patches these can be repaired using new turf – as opposed to the cost and time involved in replacing the entire area.
The lawn only turns brown during severe conditions. Instead of replacing – design, implement and maintain a regular lawn care regime to ensure the long term health of your lawn. This regime should include tasks such as watering, mowing, aerating, fertilising and regular pH tests to ensure your lawn and the soil below are getting the minerals and nutrients it needs.
When to Replace your Lawn:
It is over 15 years’ old and consistently diseased;
The lawn is 50% or more of weeds;
The lawn has very poor drainage or water puddles consistently on the surface of the lawn
The lawn has massive bare patches, does not respond to actions such as fertilising, aeration or vertimowing, and/or the soil beneath is in such bad shape that no lawn above with thrive.
What to do when Replacing your Lawn:
Select and order a variety of turf suitable for your local climate and backyard conditions. See the different varieties of turf ideal for South East Queensland lawns below:
