It’s been a busy time at Daley’s Turf. We recently undertook a huge turf project at Cooroy on the Sunshine Coast – through rain, humidity and damaging storms. In fact, according to the Local Disaster Co-ordinator, Fox Rogers the rainfall exceeded all previous records for hourly and three-hourly rainfall totals. That’s a lot of rain!
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council is in the process of constructing a brand new sports field in conjunction with the new town heavy vehicle bypass. The sports field is to be the new home of the Junior Rugby League Club and the project involves not only the sporting field but the field lighting and a full irrigation system – all on a first class playing surface. This is a major investment on behalf of the council in the sporting future of the local area. The estimated cost of the sporting field alone is $1 million.
Before we got to the site the local council staff shaped the site and created a sand profile of 200mm using state of the art laser levelling technology. This levelling ensured that the sporting field has a 3% fall for adequate drainage.
Then it was the Daley’s Turf team’s turn. All up we installed 9 200m2 of Nullarbor Couch turf. We used the Maxi Roll system which was a way of ensuring that the Juniors would be able to get out on the field and play sooner. Each Maxi Roll was 30m long and weighed in at 850kg. By the end of laying we had put down over 300 rolls in total. An expected advantage of using the Maxi Roll system was soon discovered. During this project the area received 338mm of rain over just a 3 hour period. Because of the Maxi Roll system no turf was washed away and there were no large areas that needed to be relayed as may have easily been the case had we used another system.
Using a track layer to lay the turf meant that there was minimal marking to the freshly laid turf and the entire process was completed in just 3 days – despite the adverse weather conditions.
The brand new playing surface is due to be handed over to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council within the next 12 weeks and all at Daley’s Turf wish the Junior Rugby League Club all the best for their season. Play on.
